CLXV – Brodick to Lagg

Hasteful MammalTHE morning of 6th May 2017 found me blinking at the sun’s harsh glare as its rays danced and sparkled across a vivid blue sea.  The sky was azure, dotted here and there with fluffy clouds and palm trees stood proudly in front of the B&B in which I breakfasted.  Mountains rose from the island’s interior.  Had I somehow travelled to St Lucia by mistake? A glance at my breakfast plate disabused me of the notion. No, this was definitely Scotland

CLV – Greenock to Glasgow

Hasteful MammalAT AN early hour on October’s first Monday, I bounded keenly out of my hotel to discover that the skies had clouded overnight and a bracing breeze had sprung up, throwing my choice of attire — a thin t-shirt — into question.  I dealt with this by ignoring the question entirely. I gave the chill wind the cold shoulder and remained lukewarm about the concept of wearing warm layers. T-shirts are cool.

CXV – Flint to Chester

Hasteful MammalMY MOST recent walk was neither particularly long nor particularly coastal, involving as it did an amble alongside the River Dee as far as Chester, which is not on the coast.  But what Chester lacks in coast it makes up for in being absolutely lovely and that was justification enough.

CXIV – Rhyl to Flint

Hasteful MammalIT IS early December as I write this and winter is closing in.  It is already much darker and colder than when I last walked and that was but a few weeks ago in mid-November.  And autumn was already skulking home, wrapped in a coat and muttering, even then.

CX – Benllech to Beaumaris

Hasteful MammalMONDAY mornings are not renowned for their better qualities and are sadly often only appreciated in contrast to something worse.  Monday last week (as I write this) was a glorious exception, beginning with the awareness that I’d taken the day off and that a full English Welsh breakfast awaited.  Also it was sunny, I had slept well and I was ready to walk…

To be honest, I think that Monday was more than a little confused. I know I was.

CV – Rhosneigr to Trearddur

Hasteful MammalTHE last weekend in July witnessed my return to Rhosneigr, alighting from a train in the late morning to discover, if not sunshine, then at least that the promised rain was holding off. For now, at least.

I made my way back to the centre of the village and took the time to enjoy a leisurely late breakfast. Eventually, fully fuelled with coffee and bacon and coffee — oh, and some more coffee — I was ready to go.

LXVIII – Merthyr Mawr to Port Talbot

Hasteful MammalI WOKE up early on Sunday morning, stretched, yawned, turned off my alarm and got out of bed, ready to do some more walking. As I stood up, I almost swore under my breath but I didn’t, mostly because that breath had just exhaled itself involuntarily. I had, it turned out, most definitely got blisters on the balls of my feet.

Clearly I wasn’t going to be walking all day. Or if I was, it was going to be with pain accompanying every single step.  And that would just be silly. Right?

XLVII – St Ives to Portreath

Hasteful MammalLAST weekend, with the Met Office promising snow for much of the country, was obviously going to be dangerously unsuitable for walking further along the coast.

Or was it?
