XCIX – Aberdaron to Porth Oer

Hasteful MammalMY 99TH walk was supposed to carry me from Aberdaron from to Nefyn. And technically it did but not quite as I’d intended. As it turned out, I abandoned the coast path after only nine miles and walked the rest of it by road.  This was in no way what I had planned and I quickly resolved that I would return and complete the coast path route next time.  So why did I do this?

Let me take you through it step by step…

XCVII – Portmeirion to Pwllheli

Hasteful MammalI AWOKE at an unearthly hour in Portmeirion, which was not entirely unconnected to the discovery that my phone’s alarm clock remains active even if the phone is turned off.  Its beeping and warbling thus ate up any charge it had managed to recover overnight. Still, this meant that I was awake and, after a light snooze, I was able to watch the sun rise and to amble about the village in its first rays.  It was lovely.

Extra 1 – Trefin to Strumble Head Again

Hasteful MammalAS I mentioned previously, I wasted too much time when walking from St Davids to Strumble Head and ended up skipping a couple of sections of coast path and going by road.  I hadn’t particularly wanted to skip them and several Pembrokeshire locals suggested politely that it might have been a mistake so, prior to continuing on from Goodwick, I went back and re-walked the Trefin to Strumble Head section via the coast path.

LXXXIV – Whitesands Bay to Strumble Head

Hasteful MammalTHE plan was simple. Get up at the crack of dawn and leave before breakfast, giving myself plenty of time to amble slowly and leisurely around the coast to Strumble Head. And then, if time still allowed, to continue on to Goodwick.  It was a good plan. It was doomed.

The enemy, contact with whom no battle plan survives, was in this case me. As evidenced by my getting up somewhat later than intended and then taking time out for breakfast.

LXXXIII – Newgale to Whitesands Bay

Hasteful MammalFOR one reason and another — partly that I was busy and partly that I wanted to wait until the trees had stopped trying to have sex with my nose — I allowed six weeks to elapse between my previous walk and this one.  It was probably a little too long.

I was feeling slightly out of practice as I arrived back in Newgale (Niwgwl) and looked at the path climbing up out of the village onto the clifftop. Certainly, it was long enough to miss a window of several weeks’ worth of glorious weather; it was overcast with threats of drizzle when I finally returned.

LXXVIII – Tenby to Bosherston

Hasteful MammalWITH a whole month having somehow passed since my previous walk, I thought it was high time that I embarked upon another perambulatory adventure. I thus found myself alighting, on a cold, bright and misty Saturday morning, from the earliest train to reach Tenby from Cardiff (where I had stayed overnight).

LXXVI – Carmarthen to St Clears

Hasteful MammalTHIS weekend’s walking adventure was something of a triumph. Not a triumph in the Roman sense, nor even remotely like it unless the victorious general’s processional route was first inundated by the Tiber.  Nor in the sense of an old British motor marque, now owned by BMW, whose vehicles would quickly have been mired.

What I’m trying to say here is that it was successful despite being ever so slightly muddy.

LXV – Newport to Cardiff

Hasteful MammalI AWOKE early on Monday morning, refreshed after a deep and restful sleep.  I leapt from my hotel bed with a bound of enthusiasm, keen to get on with more walking.  I threw back the curtains and looked out of the window, ready for whatever the world chose to throw at me.  What I saw out there was Newport.

LXIV – Severn Tunnel Junction to Newport

Hasteful MammalSUNDAY saw me catch a train at the relatively civilised hour of 7 am, brimming with boundless excitement at the prospect of three more days of walking in South Wales.  My optimism was not diluted by the Met Office’s advisory notices (it was Wales, of course it was going to rain) nor even by the prospect of Newport, a town so lovely that a friend of mine who hails from there chose to move as far away from it as Canada.

LXIII – Avonmouth to Severn Tunnel Junction

Hasteful MammalMY MOST recent walk was plagued by annoyances which failed to dent my enthusiasm.  For instance, I specifically delayed my walk by a fortnight so that various others would be able to join me and none of them did.  Now, I’m quite happy to walk on my own but had I known I’d be doing that, I’d not have postponed it. I think in future I’ll just plan for myself and not for the benefit of others.
