XCIX – Aberdaron to Porth Oer

Hasteful MammalMY 99TH walk was supposed to carry me from Aberdaron from to Nefyn. And technically it did but not quite as I’d intended. As it turned out, I abandoned the coast path after only nine miles and walked the rest of it by road.  This was in no way what I had planned and I quickly resolved that I would return and complete the coast path route next time.  So why did I do this?

Let me take you through it step by step…

LXXXVII – Newport to Cardigan

Hasteful MammalBETWEEN Newport and the Pembrokeshire–Ceredigion border lie some truly stunning cliffs with some quite unnerving cliff paths clinging to the top of them.  This walk therefore threatened to test my head for heights and so it did. Mostly, I passed, although I admit to feeling unnerved in some places.  It was worth it.

LXXVIII – Tenby to Bosherston

Hasteful MammalWITH a whole month having somehow passed since my previous walk, I thought it was high time that I embarked upon another perambulatory adventure. I thus found myself alighting, on a cold, bright and misty Saturday morning, from the earliest train to reach Tenby from Cardiff (where I had stayed overnight).

LXVIII – Merthyr Mawr to Port Talbot

Hasteful MammalI WOKE up early on Sunday morning, stretched, yawned, turned off my alarm and got out of bed, ready to do some more walking. As I stood up, I almost swore under my breath but I didn’t, mostly because that breath had just exhaled itself involuntarily. I had, it turned out, most definitely got blisters on the balls of my feet.

Clearly I wasn’t going to be walking all day. Or if I was, it was going to be with pain accompanying every single step.  And that would just be silly. Right?

LXI – Weston-Super-Mare to Yatton

Hasteful MammalBY MEANS of the time-honoured method of not actually going to bed, I was up bright and early on the last day of June and so caught the first available train back to Bristol.  There I met up with ‘Alice’ and together we caught another train to Weston-Super-Mare.

LVI – Ilfracombe to Lynmouth

Hasteful MammalON MONDAY morning, as most of my friends were commuting to work, I was arriving in Ilfracombe by bus, having already ridden the overnight coach from London to Exeter and then the first train of the morning to Barnstaple.

LIII – Hartland Quay to Westward Ho!

Hasteful MammalI awoke early on the First of April, vaguely convinced that my phone alarm must be playing some sort of April Fool’s Day prank.  Alas, it was not. Blearily, I crawled from my bed and prepared for a full day of walking.

LII – Bude to Hartland Quay

Hasteful MammalFOR ME, the last day of March began with an overnight coach from London to Plymouth and then, after breakfast, I jumped on the first bus back to Bude.  Not entirely coincidentally, it was also the last day on which the 576 Bus from Plymouth to Bude would be running a full service; Cornwall Council would no longer subsidise the route as of the first of April and thereafter there would only be one bus per day, arriving in Bude in late evening.

XXXII – Torquay to Kingswear

Hasteful MammalI AWOKE bright and early in my dodgy-yet-pretentious hotel room feeling very hungry indeed. I had gravely miscalculated in not stopping to eat before getting to the hotel on Saturday night, despite passing a plethora of restaurants in Torquay, and had then felt too tired to go out and look for food upon arriving there. In consequence, I had gone to bed early on a sumptuous dinner of one packet of crisps and my body was demanding calories before it conquered any more hills.

XXXI – Exmouth to Torquay

Hasteful MammalI WASN’T planning to walk last weekend. Instead, I thought I’d rest my tired knees, which were starting to complain, in an achy sort of way, about the billion or so steps I’ve recently forced them up and down. No, I decided, this weekend I will stay home.
